When?

Where?

Q: What is a tech rehearsal?

A: Basically, this is when we set the technical elements for the dances. There are a lot of moving parts to put on a good show, and this is when we work out all of the kinks. We will set the lighting, sound, and any special effects that might be needed for a dance. This is also an opportunity for the dancers to experience being on/back stage, figure out their spacing, see what side of the stage they need to be on (right & left is tricky!), etc. Being on the stage can be a little disorienting at first, so we want to make sure all of our dancers feel confident and prepared for recital day. For tech, dancers should be in full costume, hair, and makeup.

Q: What is a dress rehearsal? How is that different from tech?

A: A dress rehearsal is when we run through the show from beginning to end, just like we would on recital day. This gives the dancers a chance to practice their costume changes, along with their dances, before having to be in front of an audience. This is different from tech because we do not pause to "set the stage". By the time we get to dress rehearsal, all of the technical elements have been arranged. This is both the tech crew and the dancers opportunity to practice and make sure the show runs smoothly. Dancers should be in full costume, hair, and makeup for dress rehearsals.

Q: When do I need to be there? Does this apply to my kiddo?

A: Please see the schedule below! ALL dancers will have a tech time for each of their classes. Your dancer only needs to be at the school for their scheduled rehearsals. When they are done dancing, they can leave. Please note: the scheduled time is the time they need to be READY & on stage. Arrive to the school at least 10 minutes before their scheduled rehearsal to avoid being tardy. Only dancers in the 5pm show will have a full dress rehearsal.

Q: Is this all mandatory?

A: Yes! If you miss your tech/dress rehearsal, we unfortunately cannot allow your dancer to perform. We do our best to get everyone the schedule in advance so you can plan your week accordingly. If you have a conflict that you can not rearrange, let us know ASAP, and we will do everything possible to accommodate you.

Q: Can we watch these rehearsals?

A: Parents/guardians are free to watch the tech rehearsals, but NOT the dress rehearsals. Dancers may watch both tech and dress rehearsals. For tech, only parents/guardians and siblings will be allowed in the auditorium. Please do not invite your extended family and friends.

Costumes

Costumes and accessories will be sent home beginning the week of May 17th. If you have a balance on your account, your child will not receive their costumes until your account is up to date. Accessories, tights & socks will be provided with the costumes if needed. Shoes must be purchased separately. Hair pieces will go on the right side of the bun (headbands, hats, tiaras etc. are an obvious exception).

When your child’s costume is sent home, please make sure they have all of their belongings BEFORE leaving the studio. Once it leaves the building, it is your responsibility to take care of. It is important to keep a checklist of everything your dancer needs for recital day. Unfortunately, there is no way to replace lost or damaged items, and we do not have extras. That being said, do not wear your costume before recital!

LABEL YOUR DANCER'S NAME IN EVERYTHING!

Undergarments: Undergarments should be flesh colored, as inconspicuous as possible, and should only be worn as needed. Just like swimwear, dancers do not need to wear underwear under their leotards. For dancers that have multiple costume changes, a nude leotard or bra top and briefs may be wanted for modesty when changing. Here are links to appropriate examples: Leotard, brief, bra top.

CHILDREN'S PROGRAM

(Dance Basics, Pre-Primary, Primary 1, Beginner Hip Hop, Beginner Acro)

NO Body Glitter, NO Doughnut Buns!

Hair - High Bun

  1. Slick hair back with gel and hairspray, and secure into a high ponytail at the crown of

  2. the head.

  3. Twist the ponytail, and begin wrapping tightly. Use hairpins to secure the bun in place.

  4. Spray with hairspray so there are no flyaways!

  5. Bobbi pin hairpieces in place

Makeup

  1. Eyes: Apply a thick layer of mascara to the eyelashes. Tip: Have your dancer look at your shoulder as you apply the mascara. It’s okay to blink, just don’t squint!

  2. Using a big fluffy brush, apply blush to cheekbones. Try not to use colors that are too orange or red. Natural pinks look best.

  3. Apply a soft/sheer red lipstick/lip-stain/lipgloss. Using a lipstick brush works best when applying to little lips.

ALL DANCERS 8+

During performances, makeup and hair is part of your costume. Please follow these instructions for your hair and makeup application! Body glitter is prohibited from all performances.

Makeup

  1. Eyes: If needed, start by applying a thin layer of primer to your entire eyelid. You may use an actual eye primer or concealer to do this. Then, use a light nude (a shade or two lighter than your skin tone) over your entire eyelid. Next, use a medium/dark brown in the crease, and blend slightly upward. Now, apply your eyeliner on the top and bottom (liquid or gel works best for the top). Wing slightly. Now, add your lashes (this is optional for everyone except company)! If your eyelids are shorter than the lash strip, trim them until they are slightly shorter than your upper lash line. Depending on your eye shape and size, the type of eyelash you use may vary. Choose something of medium/light thickness and length (similar to Ardell Demi wispies, style 105 or 113). Lastly, apply mascara on top and bottom lashes.

  2. Eyebrows: Lightly fill in eyebrows. If you're blonde, or have very light brows, use a shade darker than your natural hair color.

  3. Skin: Start with a light layer of moisturizer, then apply concealer on any blemishes. Next, apply an even layer of foundation over your entire face. Blend well to avoid any lines or blotches. Set your foundation with a loose, pressed, or translucent powder.

  4. Cheeks: Use a big fluffy brush and apply blush to your cheekbones. It’s important to make sure you don’t under or over use your blush. You need enough to define your cheekbones from the stage, but not so much that you look like a clown!

  5. Lips: Use a deep red lipstick. Make sure to stay inside the lines! Use lip liner to keep the lipstick from bleeding. We recommend Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink in the color Voyager.

Hair

Low bun with a middle part.

Bun “donuts” are prohibited!

  1. Begin by parting your hair straight down the middle.

  2. Next, smooth the hair into a low ponytail and tightly secure with a hair tie.

  3. Twist the ponytail, and begin wrapping tightly. Use hairpins to secure the bun in place. The bun should be fairly flat. Hair Pin Hint: Insert the prongs a little way into the edge of the bun, catching a small amount of the bun edge. Then turn the prongs outwards to catch some of the hair outside the bun. Lastly, turn the prongs inwards again and push into the center of the coil. Insert as many pins as you need around the edges of the bun, until it feels secure.

  4. Wrap the bun with a hair net, and secure with a few extra hair pins.

  5. Finish with hairspray!
